One month in South America

This past summer, I took some time between jobs to fulfil a long-term dream, that’s been on my bucket list for the last decade: hiking the Inca trail, seeing the Uyuni salt flats, and experiencing the culture of South America. This is just a tiny sample of that adventure.

Kiwi North Island Adventures

Dramatic volcanic landscapes, boiling pools, glow worm caves, hobbit holes, Maori culture, breathtaking island views, a long term bucket list item crossed off, and a dream come true! In no particular order.

Chasing Shadows

The first time I saw a total solar eclipse was in Romania in 1999. My home was in an area with something like 98% partial coverage. We didn’t have internet at home back then, so I couldn’t easily look up what the difference between 98% and totality really was. I almost stayed at home. Luckily, on...

Sunset cityscapes

The 2nd annual Tokyo Digital Artist Photographers’ Group Exhibition is on at the Design Festa Gallery in Harajuku from June 23-28th, 2017, and this year I am once again lucky enough to be among the featured artists. The theme I have chosen this time is “Sunset Cityscapes”, and here are...

Festivals and traditions in Japan

One of the most wonderful things about Japan is its rich culture – every little village or neighborhood is bound to have a “matsuri” (festival) at least once a year, where locals and visitors alike can enjoy street food, live music, and foster a sense of community. Here are six...

Spring is once again approaching in stride, with the first cherry blossoms forecast to open in Tokyo in a little over a week! Can you believe it? If you’re looking for inspiration regarding where to go to enjoy this amazing time of year, here is a collection of our favourite moments from...

Two weeks of fabulous adventures with a great crew. Finally got to see the amazing Petra and float in the Dead Sea!

Eclectic Wonders Photography Exhibition

Seeing pictures come to life in an art gallery never gets old, so I’m happy to announce that, between January 20-22, some of my artwork will be on display at the Ehrismann Residence in Yokohama, as part of a group exhibition entitled “Eclectic Wonders”. The theme I have chosen for this event is “Colors of...

Almost unreal: experiments in photography

This year, I am once again participating in the Tokyo Digital Artist Photographers’ Group Exhibition taking place at the Design Festa Gallery in Harajuku from May 26th until June 1st, and the topic I have chosen this time is “Almost unreal: experiments in photography”. The aim is to present different techniques...

Flower field frenzy

Japanese people’s enthusiasm for flower watching extends far beyond the end of the world-famous cherry blossom season. Around the second half of April and into “Golden Week” (a series of national holidays during the first week of May), many parks throughout the country put on an amazing display of flowers of...

Cosplay in Akihabara

As you know, the photography part of this blog is largely dedicated to landscape/nature/travel-related themes. But, as a scientist, I also like to experiment with new techniques and new subjects. So here is a very different post from most of the others on this site, aiming to showcase some of...

Cherry blossom season in Kyoto

On the third spring of living in Japan, I finally made it to Kyoto during the peak cherry blossom season. The beauty of the delicate flowers against the backdrop of Kyoto’s famous traditional architecture and old temples definitely make it worth the trip, although it was uncomfortably busy and the...

The special ingredients of Earth

Great video by the Science@NASA team describing one of our recently published results, demonstrating that the “recipe” of chemical elements required for life to evolve must be common throughout the cosmos!

Danube Delta

After so much traveling around the world, this year I decided to spend a late summer vacation much closer to home — in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site, hosting the third largest biodiversity on the planet (after the Great Barrier Reef and the Galapagos Archipelago), and...

Winter in Transylvania

I’m about to head out on a summer photo-shoot of picturesque Romania, but before I do, I wanted to post a few of my favorite photographs from the past winter’s road trip through beautiful Transylvania. If you’re still looking for inspiration for a road trip over the coming winter break,...

Summer lantern festivals in Tokyo

In summer, when neither fields of flowers, nor colorful autumn leaves, nor Christmas light decorations are around, Japan indulges in a spectacle of night lights, including Hanabi (firework shows) and lantern festivals. This is a collection of photos taken during two lantern festivals in July 2015: the Mitama Matsuri at...

Tokyo Christmas lights

Although Christmas in Japan isn’t an actual official holiday, Tokyo probably sports some of the most impressive displays of Christmas lights in the world. So enjoy these photos as you get into the holiday spirit – and if you’re in Tokyo, go check out these places in person, we promise...

Ten shades of autumn in Japan

Carefully selected from more than 2300 photos taken over the course of almost an entire month, here are some of our favourite moments from the second season of fall foliage in Japan! Most of these were taken in and around Tokyo, so make sure to also check our blog post...

Autumn in Kyoto

Formerly the imperial capital of Japan for more than one thousand years, the City of Ten Thousand Shrines is famous for its temples – especially so during the autumn foliage, when the temple gardens put on a spectacle of colours that is quite probably unique in the world. This season, we went to Kyoto to...

Aerial views of the Bay Area

A bit like our astrophotography posts, this gallery was born at another crossroads of our hobbies: Norbi as a private pilot (often joined by our friend Aurelien), and Aurora as the shutterbug – all in the context of the beautiful setting that is the Bay Area.
